The USS Flier by Michael Sturma
The USS Flier is about a World War Two U.S. Navy submarine serving in the Pacific. On the Flier's first war patrol, it ran aground in a reef off of the coast of Midway. After repairs to the Flier's hull, it went out again. It was very successful, sinking many ships. Only one sinkage was confirmed, though. While on patrol, something happened. The Flier felt a tremendous shock wave, and the hull began filling up with seawater. Only fourteen of the near one-hundred crewmembers survived the sinking, and later, others lost their lives while swimming in the sea. Only eight made it to shore, where they met guerrilla fighters.
The fighters took them to a harbor, and called a nearby submarine, the USS Redfin, up to the island to pick up the crewmen. All eight of them survived form there.
Not only does The USS Flier talk about what it was like for the crash survivors, it also shows the way that WWII naval underwater warfare was used to fight the Japanese. This book is for those who are interested in learning about warfare in the navy, especially underwater operations.
